This course is especially
for those who have completed Practical English Phonetics and Phonology at
I.P.A.
The aim of the course is to
provide insight into how the intonation system really works. Participants
will learn to recognise and practise placing extra emphasis on important
words (prominence); how to recognise and pronounce the tones (referring
tones, proclaiming tones, level tones, etc.); the various functions of these
tones (referring to common background, new information, role of the speaker,
hesitations, low key and high key); the rhythm of spoken English; and how to
apply these intonation theories in our daily and business lives (reading
presentations, reports and speeches). The introduction of the accents of the
English-speaking world*.
The course also covers the application of advanced fluency skills for
listening practice: weak-from, linking, assimilation. And the use of audio books for
further application..

This part
covers the general rules of the following accents of English: Received
Pronunciation, the North of England, the South of England, London (Cockney),
Wales, Scotland, Ireland, New York City, Canada, New England (U.S.), South of
the United States, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
