Aims:
To improve students' understanding of English pronunciation and speech system with the help of diagrams, IPA symbols and basic theories.
Topics:- Organs of speech and the production of English sounds
- The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
- Vowels and consonants
- Syllable and stress
- Application of phonetic symbols in dictionaries
- The pronunciation of -ed ending verbs
- Weak-forms and strong-forms
- Connected speech: linking, assimilation, elision
- Introduction to intonation and phrasing
- Accents of English: Received Pronunciation (RP) and General American
